AFFILIATION & RECOGNITION

In order to streamline the educational process and keep costs down, the Mission School of Ministry is building strategic partnerships with other institutions rather than seeking its own accreditation.  The following affiliations and recognitions speak to the MSM’s unique vision for integrative partnering, and our statement on Faculty Credentials and Academic Quality emphasizes our rigorous academic focus.

Anglican Diocese of the South (Loganville, GA)

MSM is an official Clergy training/credentialing institution of the Anglican Diocese of the South (ACNA).  The full MSM program (Aspirant Track) offers a Mission Chattanooga Abbey authorized/recognized program leading to preparation for ordination.

All parties interested in enrolling in the MSM should note that completion of the MSM course of study does not guarantee ordination, nor does it guarantee job or ministry placement at an ADOTS church. The "discernment process" for ordination within Anglicanism is multi-pronged. The MSM simply serves as one way of fulfilling the academic component required for consideration for ordination.

MSM Policy on Faculty Credentials and Academic Quality

MSM is committed to high-quality instruction within the purview of its academic offerings. To this end, only faculty who have attained an earned doctoral degree (Ph.D., Th.D., D.Min, etc.) or who have attained “candidate” status within such a doctoral program* will be hired to serve as instructors for any MSM academics course. These instructors, in consultation with the Dean of the MSM, are responsible for the construction, delivery, and grading of all MSM coursework and for ensuring that its level of depth and rigor is equivalent to that of “graduate level” study in the relevant topical areas.

Disclaimer: The MSM is not a governmentally recognized “educational body” (such as a college or university); it is a church-based program of theological learning and ministry preparation that draws on well-qualified tutors, clergy, and scholars to provide a robust journey of spiritually formative training.

*Candidate status is here defined as having passed either their comprehensive examinations (for doctoral programs in the U.S.) or their academic upgrade (for doctoral programs outside the U.S.).

Academic Recognition: Bryan College

The MSM has received academic recognition for the quality of its program from Bryan College (Dayton, TN). MSM participants in the Aspirant Clergy and Christian Leadership Tracks can earn a limited amount of graduate credit from Bryan College through their MSM studies.

Academic Recognition: Richmond University

The MSM has received academic recognition for the quality of its program from Richmont University (Chattanooga, TN / Atlanta, GA). A certain amount of MSM coursework is recognized as transferable into one of Richmont’s discipline-specific graduate degrees.

Ministry Partner: The House

The MSM has partnered with the The House, a large collegiate ministry on the campus of the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga). The House employs four interns every year, and these interns participate in the Christian Studies Track of the MSM to develop them as thoughtful disciples of Christ and to help empower their ministry to college students.

Ministry Partner: The Chattanooga House of Prayer

The MSM is in the process of partnering with The Chattanooga House of Prayer (ChattHOP), an inter-denominational ministry focused on facilitating prayer ministry and reflective worship throughout the city of Chattanooga. It is hoped that ChattHOP’s pastoral staff will contribute to the MSM’s spiritual formation by providing instruction on various disciplines and traditions of prayer.

PROGRAM TRACKS

Aspirant Clergy (AC) Track for the Anglican Diocese of the South, ACNA

(Estimated workload: 12-16 hours per week)

This track is the most in-depth program offered by the MSM. It is fully oriented toward preparing the students for robust, theologically-informed, ministry in a church. Students are deeply immersed in academics, spiritual formation, and practical ministry, the “three branches” of the MSM. This program is two years in length and requires the MSM Core Academics, Spiritual Formation, and a Ministry Practicum.

Christian Leadership (CL) Track

(Estimated workload: 6-10 hours per week)

This track is aimed at all students seeking full credit for rigorous theological education and in-depth spiritual formation, but who do not currently aspire to ordination. Students in the CL Track pursue coursework and formation but with no practical ministry requirement. This program is two years in length and requires the MSM Core Academics and Spiritual Formation.

Christian Studies (CS) Track

(Estimated workload: 3-5 hours per week)

The Christian Studies track is a unique option designed for any Christian seeking excellent theological and spiritual formation for their education and edification, but who is too limited in available time or resources to fulfill all of the academic assignments. The CS Track allows participants to “audit” all classes, attending all class sessions (and Spiritual Formation meetings) while not being required to complete any academic assignments.  This program is two years in length and requires an auditing of the MSM Core Academics and Spiritual Formation.

CORE ACADEMICS (8 Courses Over 2 Years; CS Track audits)

Church History 1 – Old Testament – Church History II

Christianity & Counseling – New Testament – Systematic Theology

Anglican History and Doctrine – Applied Missional Theology

SPIRITUAL FORMATION (2 Years; all Tracks participate)

Full Participation in Spiritual Formation Meetings, Readings, and Seminars for Duration of the Program

PRACTICAL MINISTRY (10 hours per week over 2 years; AC Track only)

Part-Time (10 hours per week) Participation in Significant Local Ministry for Duration of Program

(Church and Ministry role must be approved)
